In her Introduction to Psychology courses, professor Trina Brown asked her students to create a short illustrated children’s book based on their own evaluations of their dreams.

At the beginning of the quarter, Brown said, she asked students to record their nightly dreams in a dream log for the first few weeks of the course. Then at midterm, the students each selected a dream they felt best represented some aspect of their lives. They used the events, images, emotions and ideas from that dream to create a children’s book. Students used a variety of media, including digital video and mixed media.

Brown said the project was a supplement to a more theoretical discussion about the research of dreams. It gave students a chance apply psychological concepts to their lives and to integrate the concepts with their understanding of art and design, which are both key learning outcomes for the course, she said.

I feel as though my dream of everyone dancing to different styles of music represents the little part in all of us that makes us an individual. The inability to stop dancing I see as representing our inability to hide who we truly are from ourselves. I saw my girlfriend mysteriously switching places as a representation of how I see her as both my best friend and my whole world. I wanted to mix these themes of identity and love into my children’s story.

The dream represents my tumultuous relationship with New York City. For a short time before I came to Atlanta, I lived there with my ex girlfriend. The city has its qualities, but it's so massive, sometimes it feels like it was consuming you. I took the characters in the story and turned them into forest animals. The main character, Mr. Raccoon, finds comfort in the simplicity of the forest, but is seduced by a city dwelling creature. The forest animal finds intense discomfort in the city, despite certain conveniences. Ultimately, the forest animal returns to the forest. He misses some aspects of the city, but finds solace in the tranquility that the forest offers.

The importance of getting my tasks completed comes to mind when I think about my dream. I have a strong feeling of determination. The day before I had the dream I was working against the clock to finish an assignment. The entire dream took place in my neighborhood, mostly my house and the house across the street. The story-plot seems to be about missing something of importance, being given a task of great importance, looking for missing/hidden things, and coming upon a problem in the way.

Although my dream to some people would seem like it would be scary, I didn’t feel scared, just normal. There was a point in the dream that had to do with a rock band playing and it felt very similar to how I am in real life because my boyfriend plays in a band. I think I had this dream because I always have to go to his shows and since I am in design school, we are constantly bickering about who’s better or who’s right.

The part of me that is most prominent within the dream is my desire to be helpful. I felt happy while dreaming because I was helping people who needed my help as opposed to trying to help people who don't want help. I believe I had this dream because I've felt helpless and a little isolated since moving to Georgia, and I need to keep reminding myself that the test of life is to try to live with love and compassion in your heart no matter how it is received.

When I think about my dream I think about my childhood when I watched ice skating on television. I am reminded of being the odd ball in the family. In the dream I felt pure and free. I was enjoying the adventure and the new experience of ice skating. I guess the best way to describe it is the feeling that one may get when they move to a new location. In other words I was free to do whatever I wanted and not worry about others' personal judgments.

In my dream, a sense of being lost and then found comes to me. Feeling really low at one point, and then better further on. I felt at first confused and misplaced. Like there was no one to help me out of this situation. As the dream progressed, I gained more confidence in myself. In the dream I felt like I had to give up something to be able to see my friends again. And outside of the dream world, I am seeing that I have to give up a few things (like working so much) to finally be at a normal pace.

The close of the quarter also means the end of the winter segment of the Ivy Hall Writers Series.

The final weeks of the winter round of the series featured such names as Margaret Atwood, author of “The Year of the Flood;” Will Pearson, president and co-founder of mental_floss magazine; and Margaret Anthony, a writer and producer for CNN. Each writer offered a wealth of information to the groups of students who got to participate in roundtable workshops with them at Ivy Hall.

Margaret Atwood
The soft-spoken Canadian novelist and poet talked to students Feb. 23 at Ivy Hall about a myriad of topics, including what she thinks separates her work from others in her genre.

Atwood is perhaps best known for her works of science fiction — although she prefers the term “speculative fiction.”

Labels are merely “bookstore conveniences,” she said. “Genres are always cross-pollenating.”

So what does make her work different from the books with “monsters, pixies and talking vegetables”?

“I write about the kind [of things] that could actually happen,” Atwood said.

Atwood also gave students insight into her creative process and how she develops characters. To connect with and understand the people in her tales, she said creates timelines of their lives and assigns each character a zodiac sign. For instance, Jimmy, from Atwood’s book “Oryx and Crake,” is a Gemini, she said.

Atwood kept students engaged with her mix of knowledge and humor.

“I thought she was interesting,” said Angelica Washington, a graduate arts administration student. “She had a very entertaining approach, which I enjoy.”

After her intimate workshop with graduate and undergraduate students, the popular author read before a packed public audience in event space 4C.

Will Pearson

Will Pearson, president and co-founder of mental_floss magazine, visited SCAD March 2 as part of the Ivy Hall Writers Series.

Following Atwood in the winter roundup of Ivy Hall lecturers was the president and co-founder of mental_floss magazine. Pearson describes the general interest publication as one that “blurs the lines between education and entertainment.” Mental_floss puts a fun spin on facts — everything from the history of toilet paper to the origins of ice.

He said the idea for the magazine was born out of a dorm room at Duke University where he and co-founder Mangesh Hattikudur were students, and it stemmed from watching the hit game show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire.”

During his March 2 workshop, Pearson offered a wealth of tips for aspiring writers. Among them: Look at yourself as a small business. Much like a business, he said, all writers should have a quick pitch — of 30 seconds or less — that sums up who they are as writers. He urged writers to start blogs and develop personal advisory boards for feedback and networking.

Pearson also invited the writers at the workshop to e-mail him personally any ideas they may have for mental_floss, with one small caveat — “know the content of the publications before you start pitching to them.”

Students said they found Pearson’s workshop helpful and inspiring.

“He’s the type of person who makes you want to go out there and attempt the impossible; to reach for higher things,” said graduate writing student Alexandria Jemison.

Pearson also gave a lecture open to the public in event space 4C.

Margaret Anthony
Although not a part of the lecture series, Margaret Anthony, a writer and producer for CNN, also stopped by Ivy Hall to workshop with students on March 4. Her visit was a part of the Ivy Hall Writers Roundtable, which is open to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in SCAD’s writing program.

Anthony spoke candidly about her work at CNN and other professional experiences. She described a typical day for her at the news network and demonstrated how she creates on-air spots to promote CNN’s prime-time shows. She walked students through the process, from the brainstorming and storyboarding stages to the finished product.

Anthony also offered advice to up-and-coming writers and stressed the importance of having multiple skill sets to survive in today’s job market.

“I’m here to tell you today,” she said, “have as many functions as you possibly can.”

Anthony’s workshop also contained tidbits for students interested in other aspects of TV journalism and the inner workings of CNN.

“When she spoke about the techniques she used to create the bumps for the broadcasts, it [shed] light on things that I did not know about CNN,” said Brandon Marshall-Todd, a graduate writing student. “I hope to hear some more from her in the future.”

Coming up
The spring round of the Ivy Hall Writers Series will kick off on March 25 with a visit the Emmy-winning writer for “The Simpsons,” Joel Cohen.

Sarah Nelson, author of “So Many Books, So Little Time” and former editor-and-chief of Publishers Weekly, will kick off the Writers Roundtable series with a workshop on April 1.

When you go to see a movie that seems to promise a mix of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Escape from Alcatraz,” you expect a fair amount of twists and turns. But there are almost too many in acclaimed director Martin Scorsese’s newest creation, “Shutter Island.”

The first hour and a half is so layered with visual tricks, creepy insane asylum visuals and subterfuge that it borders on overwhelming. Slowly — very slowly — but surely, though, the layers are peeled back and viewers are treated to a solid plot and some of the creepiest cinematography thus far this year.

The setup: Two federal marshals, circa 1954, investigate the disappearance of a patient from a mental institution on an Alcatraz-like island off of the coast of Massachusetts. Teddy Daniels, the lead detective, played gamely by Leonardo DiCaprio, comes to the titular island not only to solve the mystery, but to blow the lid off what he thinks is a much larger conspiracy with the facility, its patients and personnel.

Joining DiCaprio are his marshal partner, played by Mark Ruffalo and a disturbing, yet cunning, group of patients and psychologists who keep the island machinations going.

The movie starts off simple enough, but from the first 10 minutes on, it throws in almost every element from the thriller playbook. Tight editing, dark visuals, ghosts, visions, dream sequences, bad weather and psychological torment all make a cameo. It’s almost as if Scorsese wrote the ending first and then tried to scatter as many of the puzzle pieces as he could throughout the film.

This film isn’t his best work, but it still manages to maintain an element of intrigue to get you through its 138-minute runtime. It can be slow. It can be confusing. It can be tiring. But the end makes the whole thing worth it or at least gives the movie enough rationale to justify sitting through it.

We can’t spoil it, not even a tiny bit, because any advance knowledge, even if you figure out the twist by the end of the movie, ruins the fun. The big “a ha!” moment is too important and integral to the enjoyment of this film. In fact, it’s a safe assumption that “Shutter Island” is one of those movies that lives or dies by its twist.

This magic trick is helped by an ending revelation that will have you trying to go back and put the puzzle pieces together long after you leave the theater. You may think you know what’s going on, but some part of the intricate solution will throw you for a loop and tickle your brain.

Even if you don’t think the end justifies the means, watching “Shutter Island” is still a visual feat for the eyes. The cinematography is top-notch. The film gets plenty of mileage out of its setting, with a landscape as foggy as a patient’s memory and interiors as dark as their soul. It’s a creepy setting, and the art direction mixes its ’50s feel with a timeless quality. The facilities are a neat mix of sterile steel and rustic architecture, and some late cliff action is a scenic treat.

In the end, Scorsese’s drama makes you go nearly as mad as the patients on the island, but it pulls you back from the brink of insanity just before it can consume you. Give it a shot. It may not be as Oscar-worthy as one would expect from the pedigree, but a few mind games are worth the trip.

On Feb. 25, the university held a QEP rally in the Hub, complete with ice cream, giveaways and even a drumline performance in which Art Malloy, SCAD’s dean of student success, made a cameo.

SCAD's drumline performs during the QEP rally in the Hub.

During the rally, Vice President P.J. Johnson gave a presentation to explain the ins and outs of SCAD’s QEP, dubbed a Triptych for Collaboration. The idea behind it is to bring together students, professors and outside partners, allowing students to create real-world projects for course credit.

The rally came just a day before SCAD’s reaffirmation visit from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges. SACS requires that SCAD and other degree-granting institutions in the region have a QEP in place to stay in line with SACS’s Principles of Accreditation.

To make sure rally attendees grasped the main points of Johnson’s presentation, Malloy quizzed students for a chance to win prizes.

Chris Parker, a second-year graphic design major won a hat for answering correctly the name of SCAD’s QEP. But Parker said he already had an understanding of the plan because his professor had explained it to the class just two days before the rally.

“It’s a wonderful idea, Parker said. “I think it’ll help me get my foot in the door at some of the outside organizations.”

Parker also said he has experience with collaborative learning.

“It’s something that was pushed in [my] high school, so it’s good to see it here,” he said.

After the rally, though, a few said they still had a couple of unanswered questions.

Jennifer Crane, a first-year advertising major, said she was confused about the collaborative process itself.

“I want to know more about how it would actually come about and how to get involved,” Crane said. “But I’m sure I’ll figure it out.”

And it’s a good bet she will, as professors are already introducing collaborative projects to their students.

Professor Catherine Ramsdell, who is also chair of the liberal arts department, said students in her writing for Web course are currently creating the Brownie Mix blog to promote the play “Brownie Points.”

But, as Ramsdell noted, the current collaborative projects are on a small scale and contained within their respective departments.

Students listen during the QEP rally in the Hub.

“The QEP is going to allow projects on a much larger scale,” Ramsdell said, adding that it could also bring together students from different majors to work on bigger projects.

Such efforts will move forward once the QEP gets the OK from SACS.

The approval process is expected to be completed Wednesday, March 3.
