A Night of Glamour: SCAD’s Annual Fashion Show

June 2, 2009

On May 16, the Savannah College of Art and Design held the Annual SCAD Fashion Show. Fashion was abuzz in downtown Savannah and everyone — students and patrons alike — were decked out in their most dazzling outfits as they packed into the Trustee’s Theatre in downtown Savannah. After the 8 p.m. show concluded, the crowed promptly moved to the after party, held at River Club, a renovated warehouse located at 3 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., where more student work was displayed on mannequins on both levels of the venue. The Connector covered the SCAD-Atlanta students, staff, and faculty that were present at the show, as well as SCAD-Atlanta student work featured in the show and at the afterparty. Appetizers flowed as freely as the laughter from all of the students in attendance, while all the guests took their time in admiring all of the work put on display in culmination of years of hard work. Missed the show? Watch it at www.scad.tv. Read more

A Taste of England

April 13, 2009

International Coffee Hour, an event that Dean of Student Services Art Malloy says aims to educate the SCAD community about other cultures, took place in the Hub on April 8. “Our goal is to increase the level of cultural competency by introducing students to the cuisine, snacks and customs of various countries,” said Malloy. “It is also our hope that we can provide a little piece of home for our international students and those members of the faculty and staff that come from to different countries.” A different country will be featured at each event. This time, the event featured coffee and platters of English food. “Based on the attendance at the English Coffee Hour, we should expect a good turnout for coffee hours planned for the future,” said Malloy. This event also served as a platform to introduce Brett Reichert, SCAD-Atlanta’s new coordinator of international student services and student conduct. Reichert also will work with UNI, a SCAD-Atlanta student organization that welcomes international and American students, to coordinate future coffee hours.

Anime Weekend Atlanta welcomes all and loves them long time.
By Jack Huang

japanese.jpgI’d like you to conjure a stereotypical image of an anime junkie from America in your head. Yes, all sorts of bespectacled, hygiene deprived, stuttering manifestations of nerd culture should soon come to mind. Now imagine nearly a thousand of them all huddled together, mutually empowering their
obsessions in Anime Weekend Atlanta (AWA) — it’s not a pleasant first impression. Read more

Students victorious in face-off with faculty in outdoor basketball tournament
Last Friday, SCAD students and staff members competed in a scrimmage basketball game on the outside court at Spring House. The game came from an idea that Art Malloy, the dean of  students, had. “Art Malloy wanted a basketball game with a faculty and staff team competing against the student team that won the basketball tournament; once we started planning it we  decided to open it up to everyone,“ said fourth-year broadcast design and motion graphics  student Conroy Williamson. The students came away with a landslide victory of 51 to 25. The players played competitively, but commented on how they were just enjoying the opportunity  to play this kind of game. “This was a really great idea because we actually able to play against some of SCAD’s faculty members,” said second-year advertising design student Nathan  Lombardi. Lombardi also said that he looks forward to doing it again.
