Be cautious of publishers
The office of graduate studies has become aware that certain publishers are contacting alumni and recent graduates and offering to publish their thesis. While these companies may be bona fide entities, graduate students and alumni should be aware that they are considered vanity presses, meaning that they will publish any work for anyone without the benefit of peer review. They are not considered an academic press and will not enhance your academic credentials in any way.

Furthermore, they often make the promise of royalties accruing from the sale of your published thesis and thus ask for sensitive personal and financial information, including your social security number and bank account information. As a reminder, SCAD will never release your contact or other personal information to these companies. It is our recommendation that students and alumni refrain from doing business with vanity publishers or providing such information to them. Always investigate companies thoroughly and read all terms and contracts carefully before agreeing to do business with them.

Important notice about thesis
Beginning with the Winter 2010 quarter graduate students must submit their thesis document to Smithfield Cottage and not the Jen Library. Requirements for paper—margins, signature page, electronic copy, binding fee, etc.—all remain the same. Guidelines for submission can be found in MySCAD under the resources tab in the Department Directory channel, at Graduate Studies.

The only change is that the office of graduate studies will accept the thesis during regular business hours—8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For questions, please call the office of graduate studies at 912.525.6315.

Advising updates

Need another Class? PHIL 701 is still open!
Aesthetics
This course is designed to explore aesthetics as a branch of modern philosophy. Aesthetic investigation applies basic analytical tools of philosophy to issues such as the difference between art and nonart, the definition of beauty, the function of art and the main classical and contemporary theories of art.
The instructor is: Joshua Rayman¿
The course is at SCAD Savannah, and is offered Tuesdays and Thursdays 2-4:30 p.m. in Fall 2010.

New Walk-in System for Savannah graduate students
Beginning Monday, June 7, graduate academic advising will begin a new set-up of walk-in hours and appointments in order to better serve our students. Students are always encouraged to meet with their staff adviser. We are here as a means of support and a resource to you. Appointments are usually best since you know that there won’t be a wait, but walk-ins are also an option if you need to see an adviser on short notice.

This new model will make an adviser available to meet for walk-ins for 10 additional hours per week since students will be able to come in during the morning or afternoon regardless of their major. Any student may come to Smithfield Cottage between the hours of 10 a.m. to noon or 2-4 p.m. during the week to meet with the adviser on duty. Students will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. During peak times, such as the week that registration opens, it is best to make an appointment if you are short on time and cannot wait to be seen.

Walk-in sessions should generally be limited to around 15 minutes so that we are able to serve other students who might be waiting in a timely manner. The adviser on duty will do his or her best to accommodate you, but may need to schedule a mutually agreed upon appointment time if your questions warrant more time.

For more in-depth issues (academic issues, catalog updates, change or addition of major questions, readmission questions or registration planning) students will be best served by scheduling an appointment with their designated adviser. Appointments will be available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but should be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. Contact your adviser or graduatestudies@scad.edu to schedule an appointment. We know that you are very busy with your program and will do our best to accommodate you!

Please note that Siv Dalke and Rachel Stelzer will also continue to hold additional off-site advising in various buildings across campus (except during drop/add weeks and breaks between quarters):

Siv Dalke
Mondays: Montgomery Hall Cubicle 429, 3-5 p.m.
Wednesdays: Hamilton Hall Grad Lab, 3-5 p.m.

Rachel Stelzer¿
Mondays: Eichberg Hall Room 306, 1-3 p.m.

Interested in SCAD Hong Kong? Courses are available to view under the course schedule. If you are interested in attending SCAD Hong Kong this fall, contact your staff adviser for assistance at graduatestudies@scad.edu.

Note from the dean

I recently returned from a meeting of the Council of Graduate Schools, at which deans and associate deans from about 250 schools around the United States and elsewhere get together to address the issues confronting graduate education. The meeting took its focus from the recently CGS-published report titled “The Path Forward: The Future of Graduate Education in the United States.” The report highlights the fact graduate education in the US, while long considered the gold standard, is now facing difficult times. Competition from India, China and other emerging economies, poor graduation rates from high schools and colleges in the US, and lack of access for underrepresented groups, all lead to the decline in the US’s position as leader in graduate education. Why is this important? Because the well-being of the US (and world) economy is driven by the innovation that graduate education fosters.

I must admit that I’m slightly out of step with most deans. Many of them oversee large research universities with Ph.D. students advancing knowledge in the so-called STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). I’m one of the only, if not the only representative, from a specialized art and design university. I see it as my role not only to tell the SCAD story, but also to “enlighten” deans from traditional Ph.D. programs to the value of art and design education. After all, the knowledge and skills that come about from your education at SCAD is every much as valid, if not more so, in this day and age, than the way of knowing that science, engineering, technology and math foster. For too long, I try to emphasize, the STEM disciplines have held the regnant epistemology with little regard for other ways of knowing. SCAD’s extraordinary growth and its compelling story point to students’ desires to know a different way. And only recently, engineers and scientists, along with business professionals have come to see that art and design can heighten their enterprises through creativity and innovation. Educational institutions being the tradition-bound entities they are, however, are sometimes slow to respond, slow to see the value of collaboration, slow to change.

Hang in there! The future of education and the future of the economy depend on the completion of your work.

– To post an event, request information is included in the updates, or ask a question, e-mail Mariah Hay, Coordinator of Graduate Activities, at mhay@scad.edu.

SCAD Atlanta to field intercollegiate athletics in 2010

SCAD Atlanta announces the commencement of its intercollegiate athletics program beginning Fall 2010. The university will field men’s and women’s teams in three sports: cross country, golf and tennis.

Brad Iftner, a former Division I student-athlete at Eastern Illinois University, has been hired as director of athletics and also will serve as the head tennis coach for both the men’s and women’s teams. Iftner previously coached at Cumberland University and Southern Illinois University Carbondale and was the assistant tennis coach for Purdue University.
