Recently, coloring books have been marketed to adults as a way to cope with stress and other psychological problems. Although many toys from our childhood have been proven to help us cope with daily stress, society dictates that maturing is leaving these security blankets in the past and dealing with these problems on our own. While you are often told to put away childish things after a certain age, teddy bears are classic childhood toy that you should pull out of the box to help you deal with the stress of your new-found independence. Here are four reasons why you should still own a teddy bear:

1. The teddy bear has a noble beginning.

The origin of the teddy bear started with  toy companies seizing on a moment during Teddy Roosevelt’s presidential term when he refused to kill a bear. Stuffed bears wear called “Teddy’s bear” as a tongue-in-cheek political joke. The name represents a great act of humanity, and who wouldn’t want to hold the symbol of Teddy Roosevelt’s act of kindness?

2. You wouldn’t be the only person over ten who owes a bear.

A survey revealed that 35% of adults still sleep with a teddy bear. If your fear is you’ll be an adult weirdo clinging on to a childhood toy, don’t worry. You aren’t the only one who likes to tuck in with a stuffed toy.

3. Nostalgia is a creativity boost.

If you were like most children, you engaged in dramatic play, creating elaborate stories with just a few toys and a few objects from around the house. Having a constant reminder of one of your most liberating periods of creativity will benefit you as an adult artist.

4. Teddy bears are an anti-stress device.

Studies show that teddy bears can reduce stress and anxiety. Teddy bears are great for dealing with new roommates, moving to a new place or keeping calm while working on an art project you may be struggling with.

Teddy bears have the ability to help you navigate your way through adult problems. So pull Mr. Snuggles out of storage and experience a small dose of nostalgia; it’s good for you.
