Do or do not. There is no sleep.

This is the motto of the yearly SCAD event Generate, which took place in the Digital Media Center on Oct. 2 and 3. The event started early at 10 a.m. and did not stop until 10 a.m. the next day. Generate serves as a challenge of the diverse talents of SCAD students. Majors and enthusiasts from animation, film and television, graphic design, illustration, motion media design, sequential art, visual effects, writing, and even the drawing club put their skills to the test and pushed themselves for 24 hours. There were prizes to be won and challenges to be met.

I had the opportunity to talk to a few participants in this year’s challenge, Nicole Perona, fourth-year animation major;  Stephanie Pai and Matthew Rohdy, sequential graduate students; and Valentina Moreira and Fiorella Ordonez, third-year television production majors.

What are you working on?

Nicole: An angler fish mermaid maquette that is coming out of a black pond.

Stephanie: A  reverse “Little Mermaid” comic where the prince becomes a mermaid.

Matthew: A 24-Hour comic with the title “I Would Have Gotten Away With it Too If it Weren’t for the Butterfly Effect.”

Valentina: We are creating a documentary on Generate, we’ve been interviewing people all day. My voice is already going a bit hoarse.

What made you decide to participate in Generate?

NP: I tried it out last year and this is also my last year for Generate so I thought I would give it a try this year!

SP: I thought it was worth a shot.

MR: Several very, very bad decisions.

VM: It’s the competitive collaboration.

FO: Yes, and it’s a great opportunity for us to practice being in a professional setting and to work with others on a tight deadline.

How are you going to make it through the night?

NP: Coffee – but by now I’m used to it. Last year’s Generate was actually my first time drinking coffee.

SP: Sheer determination – with a little help from sugar and caffeine.

MR: I worked the graveyard shift last night, so I’m more worried about making it through the day right now.

VM: We’re trying to finish shooting and go into post-production tonight.

FO: We did all the pre-production before Generate started, so we might have already exceeded 24 hours of work.

Anything else you want us to know?

VM: Don’t be afraid of the 24 hours, the time flies by and it’s a great opportunity!
