At first glance, Papi’s seems like a tiny, cramped shop. The Cuban eatery is nothing but a corner of a building on Ponce de Leon Avenue at Myrtle Street. But inside, the restaurant proves to be warm, lively and delicious. Papi’s offer both take-out and dining in, with to-go orders made on the Ponce de Leon Avenue entrance. If you are coming in for a sit-down meal, enter through the Myrtle Street side.

On the bottom floor of the restaurant, where there is plenty of seating for leisurely lunches, the music is loud and the people are louder.

All of Papi’s sandwiches are under $10. Choose from a tuna sandwich, the Cuban hamburger, or a jerk chicken sandwich, among others. The authentic Cuban sandwich is two slices of flaky bread, stuffed with pulled pork and ham, Swiss cheese and dill pickles. There is so much meat that it almost takes over the entire sandwich. However, they also have a vegetarian plate for the non-meat-eating crowd.

Looking to add on some side items? Papi’s offers yellow saffron rice, yucca fries and fried plantains. Their French fries are delicious bites of crisp perfection, resembling fried shrimp in texture. If partial to the soggy fry, try these just once, and you will become a crispy fry believer. However, at nearly $2, the serving is on the small side — about a handful. If you’re sharing with another person, go for three orders, and you’ll be good to go.

Papi’s is a fun and tasty eating experience. Although staff can get preoccupied sometimes and leave you waiting around too long, the food is delicious enough to ensure that you’re always having a good time.
