With each new year, many people make the resolution to improve their health. They promise to maintain a healthy weight, be physically active and reduce stress. For those not in the habit, such adjustments are not easy to make and usually require a major lifestyle change.

Eating right can be a challenge for many students. Although meal plans provide healthy options, what student has not succumbed to late night snacking while pulling an all-nighter on a big project?

If your goal is to eat well, try snacking on fresh fruits and vegetables and opt for a bottle of water instead of soda. Opt for baked or grilled foods instead of the fried versions. Choose whole grains like wheat bread and brown rice. If you have a sweet tooth, eat some fruit instead of traditional desserts. Keep an eye on your portion size and keep a well-rounded diet that includes proteins like meats, beans, eggs and nuts.

Staying physically active can be a challenge for college students, and many experience first-year weight gain coined the “freshman 15.” Avoid the extra baggage by walking or riding a bike to class instead of taking the bus or driving. The trick to seeing results is to create fitness routine and stick with it. Work around your class schedule to find an hour for exercise every day. SCAD Atlanta’s fitness center offers a variety of classes including yoga, Pilates and Zumba.

Lastly, try to reduce stress. This may seem difficult when slammed with deadlines, projects and other personal concerns, but planning ahead and staying organized can alleviate a lot of stress.

Use a calendar to keep up with deadlines. Most cell phones have a calendar application and Google’s version is easy to access.

Making healthy changes can be challenging but not impossible. Make conscious choices about the food you eat and find an exercise buddy. School doesn’t have to be all work, just a healthy balancing act.
