Art History lecture series for Fall presents ‘The Princess and the knife: Virgin sacrifice in classical art’

The Art History and Liberal Arts Lecture Series will present a talk by SCAD Art History Professor, Dr. Anthony Mangieri titled, “The Princess and the Knife: Virgin Sacrifice in Classical Art.” The lecture explores the representation of the sacrificial virgins Iphigeneia and Polyxena in ancient Greek, Etruscan, and Roman art. The event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 5, 7:30p.m. at Event Space 4C. Refreshments will be served.

Digital media trailblazer brings skills to SCAD

Film and digital media luminary Scott Ross has joined the SCAD team, the college announced in a news release.
The co-founder and former CEO of Digital Domain, Inc. will serve as executive advisor to SCAD’s School of Film, Digital Media and Performing Arts. He will help launch SCAD-Hong Kong, scheduled to open Fall 2010.
Ross has been a notable figure in the entertainment and technology industries for more than 30 years. He is credited with leading companies to more than 15 Academy Award nods and seven Oscars, including one for the visual effects in the 1997 blockbuster film “Titanic.”
“I’m honored and excited to work with SCAD because of the strength and comprehensiveness of its film and digital media programs,” Ross is quoted in the news release.
“There’s not another university in the world making this kind of commitment to prepare talented students for creative careers like this university.”
Ross also will help SCAD launch a Digital Media Center in Atlanta. Set to open in September, the center will be housed in the three-story, 60,000-square-foot facility that once served as the home of WXIA, the Atlanta NBC television affiliate.
In addition, Ross will lead lectures in Atlanta and Savannah and participate workshops at the annual Savannah Film Festival, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 31- Saturday, Nov. 7.
Historic exhibition of North Korean paintings

The Granite Room in Castleberry Hill will feature an exhibition of 12 North Korean paintings from a private collection starting Friday, July 17 till Saturday, Aug. 1. There will also be a silent auction on Friday, July 24, 6-11p.m. According to the Web site, the proceeds from the auction will be used to further develop relationships with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) through the arts, and to support an established program that provides soy milk for orphans in North Korea. Show and Tell Demo: SCAD alumnus Timothy Banks, Illustrator

Timothy Banks (M.F.A., illustration, 2002), who has illustrated three children’s books and has a client list that includes McGraw-Hill, Macmillan UK, Harcourt, Houghton-Mifflin, Cartoon and SCAD’s Design Press publishing company will conduct a demonstration in acrylics and other media for Professor Jay Montgomery’s class. This demonstration will take place on Thursday, July 23, 2-3:30p.m. in Room 379. All current SCAD students are welcome to attend this event. Graduate student Yi-Hsin Tzeng’s exhibition at Trois Gallery

“Flow,” an exhibition of two unique series by graduate painting student Yi-Hsin Tzeng will be on display at Trois Gallery from July 17 till Friday, July 31. The first series, three-dimensional box paintings provide the ground on which to juxtapose figure drawings with fluid-like “flows” of color, suggesting various and ambiguous modes of desire. In the second series, created during Tzeng’s Fall 2008 New York City Workspace Opportunity, paint and foam flow amidst gritty remnants of the urban environment.

Print Center open for Summer quarter

The SCAD Color Print Center will be open all summer quarter for printing needs. The print center printers are accessible 24 hours a day, and the onsite print maganger, Jeff Williams will be available to assist students from 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Monday – Friday. The print center is located near lab 311, Building A.
College Security Report: July 7-13, 2009

5:19 a.m. — There was a power outage at the main campus for a brief moment. All systems came back online except for the C building elevators. Elevators were reset, however one elevator still did not return to service. A call was made to service the elevator.
July 11
3:56 — Security found both gates to the 1611 W. Peachtree St. building open. Supervisor checked the exterior and found no problems. Gates were closed.
July 12
9:28 p.m. — Security found a water leak on the fifth floor C building of the main campus. Water was coming down onto a piece of artwork. On-call engineer was notified of the leak and the artwork was removed from the wall.
9:28 p.m. — Security was informed that a water leak was dripping into the main lobby at Spring House. A cleaner was on site and placed a “wet floor” sign out, then mopped up the standing water. A bucket was left to catch further drips.
July 13
1:38 a.m. — Security was informed by two students that the back gate to Spring House was not working and remained locked when they were using their badge cards. Maintenance was notified and will investigate.
Atlanta Grad Preview Day: Tuesday, July 21

The admission department will host a conversation with deans and faculty about SCAD Atlanta graduate opportunities Tuesday, July 21, 7-9 p.m., at 1600 Peachtree St., Atlanta, Ga. Prospective students can get portfolio feedback from faculty and talk with admission representatives about the application process, financial aid and scholarship opportunities. Optional activities beginning at 6 p.m. include an online demonstration of an eLearning course and a tour led by a current graduate student. “Is it true that SCAD does not offer financial aid to students who have one or more siblings in college?”
False. Financial aid is available to all students who qualify and SCAD does not discriminate against siblings. Each student is reviewed for scholarship eligibility upon enrollment and can apply for additional federal and state aid by filing the FAFSA. Students are evaluated on an individual basis using the application materials presented regardless of sibling enrollment.
