Dragon*Con 2008 hits Atlanta Labor Day weekend

Dragon*Con 2008 will be held during the Labor Day weekend, Aug. 29-Sept. 1, at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, Atlanta Marriott Marquis, Atlanta Hilton & Towers and Sheraton Atlanta hotels located in downtown Atlanta.

Dragon*Con is America’s largest annual convention for fans of science fiction, fantasy and horror, comics and art, games and computers, animation, science, music, television and films. It is also one of the 10 largest annual conventions in metropolitan Atlanta.

Every year, Dragon*Con hosts more than 600 hours of panels, workshops, demonstrations and discussions with authors, editors, artists, game designers and media personalities. Some individual programming tracks concentrate on specific interests like Star Trek, Star Wars, British and American television, Anne McCaffrey’s Pern, NASA Space Science, J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth, Electronic Frontiers and more. Several new tracks of programming have also been added this year including Anime/Manga, MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online), Skeptics, Romance Writers and Horror.

Dragon*Con also presents theatrical and radio performances, concerts and dances, gaming tournaments, costume contests, parades, films, auctions and charity events. More information about tickets rates, guests, events, workshops and services can be found at www.dragoncon.org.

SCAD joins with Jeffrey Kalinsky for Fashion Cares 2008

Retailer to bestow Jeffrey New Talent Award at annual charity fashion event

The Savannah College of Art and Design again joins forces with renowned retailer Jeffrey Kalinsky for Fashion Cares 2008, to be held at 55 Allen Plaza in Atlanta, Aug. 25, 7 p.m. The annual fundraiser, which celebrates its 16th anniversary this year, benefits the Susan G. Komen for the Cure-Greater Atlanta Affiliate and the Atlanta AIDS Partnership Fund.

Hitting the runway will be six diverse collections by the seven SCAD alumnae nominated for the Jeffrey New Talent Award. This is the third year Kalinsky will bestow the award on a SCAD graduate. This year’s nominees are Hattie Saltonstall, Jessie L. Ostermann, Ashlyn Kleber, Jordana Shalhoub, Kristen Monacell, Laura Russell and Ashley Gilbert, all of whom graduated with Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in fashion in 2008.

Off the runway, models wearing menswear designs by SCAD alumni David Kolender and Nivanya Abraham will mix and mingle with the crowd.

The event includes a reception, followed by a live auction and runway fashion show featuring selections available at Kalinsky’s eponymous boutiques in Atlanta and New York. Included in the show will be pieces by Kalinsky, a longtime friend of the college and recipient of a premier Étoile Award at the inaugural SCAD Style Étoile Gala in Atlanta in 2006.

M.F.A. student invites SCAD community to artist’s talk

Denise Lira-Ratinoff, a Master of Fine Arts student in photography, will host a special evening for her show, “ELEMENTS,” Thursday, Aug. 14, 6-8 p.m., at the Hagedorn Foundation Gallery, 425 Peachtree Hills Ave., Suite 25, Atlanta. She invites all SCAD students, staff and faculty to attend the event and hear her present an artist’s talk at 6:30 p.m.  The exhibition, which closes Thursday, Aug. 21, has received excellent reviews from the Atlanta arts community.

Atlanta Police investigated a suspicious package that had been chained to a tree along the street next to the ACA Residence Hall. APD Bomb Squad arrived to check the luggage and later determined that it had no devices inside. The residence hall had been evacuated and guests were allowed back in without incident. APD is still investigating to determine the owner of the luggage.
